The Mobile Enabled Community Services (MECS) programme is a new initiative of the GSMA, a trade association of over 800 mobile network operators around the world. Established with the support of the UK Government the MECS Innovation Fund aims to provide up to £2.4M in grants.
The goal is to leverage mobile technology or infrastructure to deliver improved access to energy and water to underserved communities with the expected outcome of the fund being to improve access to energy and water for 270,000 people by December 2014 with a docus on Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
After completing the first round of the MECS Innovation Fund, concept notes for the second round are now being accepted until September 6th, 2013
Under the fund there are two kinds of grants available – seed grants and market validation grants. The seed grants (up to 200,000 pounds) will focus on supporting the research and development of early stage innovations using mobile to support access to sustainable energy and water provision. In contrast, the market validation grants of upto 350,000 in funding will support partnerships between mobile network operators and/or tower companies with community service providers to trial promising mobile technologies and business models that have the potential to increase or improve access to water or energy services to underserved communities at scale.
The MECS Innovation fund aims to identify innovative business models that can support mobile innovations for energy and water services as well as accelerate the use of these innovations within underserved communities by supporting them to scale.
In addition to providing funding, MECS aims to generate knowledge about the application of mobile enabled services which can be shared with the development community and mobile industry and stimulate productive partnerships between mobile operators/tower companies, energy provides, water providers, NGOs, entrepreneurs and academicians alike.
